1.HAGIA SOPHIA (AYASOFYA)

 

 

 

 

Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya) is an historical museum in Istanbul.It is the oldest cathedral in the world. It was built at the old city center of Istanbul's historic peninsula in AD 532-537 by Byzantine Emperor Justinian.After the conquest of Istanbul by Turks in 1453,it was turned into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.It serves a museum since 1935.Hagia Sophia is considered to be a turning point with the structural system in the history of architectural features."Sophia word"-in the name of the building- is not the name of any person.It comes from the "sophos" word which means wishdom in ancient Greek.Therefore "Hagia Sophia" name means "holy wisdom" or "divine wisdom" and is considered God's one character of the three in Orthodox Denomination.The central dome of the Hagia Sophia was broken down many times in the Byzantine period.After Architect Sinan built retaining walls,it had never destroyed.


2.BLUE MOSQUE (SULTANAHMET CAMİ)

 

 

Sultan Ahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque) was built at the old city center of Istanbul's historic peninsula in 1609-1616 by I.Sultan Ahmet.Architect of the building is Sedefkâr Mehmet Ağa.It was decorated blue,white and green İznik tiles and also big half dome and other half domes are blue,so Europeans calls it "Blue Mosque".It became the main mosque after Hagia Sophia turned into a museum.Blue Mosque is the first mosque of Turkey with six minarets.

 

3.TOPKAPI PALACE (TOPKAPI SARAYI)

 

 

Topkapi palace was built by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror and it was central administration of Ottoman Empire nearly 400 years.The Ottoman Sultans was living in this palace until the construction of Dolmabahce Palace by Sultan Abdulmecit.

 

4.GRAND BAZAAR (KAPALI ÇARŞI)

 

 

The Grand Bazaar is located the center of Istanbul and it is one of the world's largest and oldest covered markets.it holds nearly half a million people in busiest time of the day.It was built by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.

 

5.BASILICA CISTERN (YEREBATAN SARNICI)

 

 

The basilica cistern is the biggest cistern in Istanbul.You can enter it from the old building that west of Hagia Sophia.It has been called by this name cause of a nearby basilica.

 

 

6.DOLMABAHÇE PALACE (DOLMABAHÇE SARAYI)

 

 

Dolmabahce Palace was built between 1843-1856 as a blend of European architectural styles.It is work of Sultan Abdülmecit's Architect Karabet Balyan.The Ottoman Sultans was living in Topkapı palace until the construction of Dolmabahce Palace.Dolmapahçe Palace has three floors and it is symmetric.

 

7.GALATA TOWER (GALATA KULESİ)

 

 

Galata Tower is located in Galata District and it is one of the most important symbols of the city.It was built in 528 as a lighthouse tower by Byzantine Emperor Anastasius.You can see Istanbul Bosphorus,Golden Horn and Istanbul in panaromic wiew from the tower.Galata Tower is one of the oldest towers in the world.The tower was destroyed by a wide range in IV.Crusade,1204.Then walls were rebuilt by the Genoese with "Tower Of Christ" name in 1348.After rebuilding,it was the biggest building of the city in 1348.

 

8.SÜLEYMANİYE MOSQUE (SÜLEYMANİYE CAMİ)

 

 

Süleymaniye Mosque was built between 1551-1558 by Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent.Architect of the building is Architect Sinan.Suleymaniye Mosque is one of the most important examples of classical Ottoman architecture.Altough there has been a lot of earthquakes until now in Istanbul ,Süleymaniye Mosque doesn't have any fissure.

 

9.MAIDEN'S TOWER (KIZ KULESİ)

 

 

There are the various rumors about the Maiden's Tower.It has been the subject of legends.It was built on a small island that near part to Sea of Marmara of Istanbul Bosphorus.The tower which has become a symbol of Üsküdar, is the only remaining Byzantine era monument.

 

10.CHORA CHURCH (KARİYE MÜZESİ)

 

 

Chora Church was a church in Byzantium term.After the conquest of Istanbul by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in 1453,it was turned into a mosque in 1511.From 1948 until 1958 all the mosaics and frescoes were uncovered as a result of the studies. Building serves as the "Kariye Museum" since 1948.

 

11.GOLDEN HORN (HALİÇ)

 

 

The Golden Horn (Haliç in Turkish) is an inlet of the Bosphorus dividing the city of Istanbul.It is a estuary that joins the Bosphorus at the point where that strait enters the Sea of Marmara.

 

12.EMİRGAN PARK

 

 

The Emirgan Park is a historical park located in Sariyer district of Istanbul.In the 17th century,the park was given as a gift to Iranian Emir Güne Han by Ottoman Sultan IV.Murad.The park has changed hands many times over the centuries,in the 19th century it was given to Khedive of Egypt İsmail Pasha by Ottoman Abdulaziz.Tulip Festival is held every year in April since 2006.

 

13.MINIATURK (MİNİATURK)

 

 

Miniatürk is a miniature park that one of the world's largest miniature parks.Models of various important and historical buildings in Turkey are exhibited here.It was opened to visit on May 2, 2003.voice guidance system has been implented first time in Miniaturk.The system provide information in nine different languages​​.(Turkish, English, French, German, Russian, Arabic, Persian, Japanese, and Spanish).Miniaturk is a nice touristic park and also culture and social responsibility project.

 

14.ISTANBUL MODERN

 

 

Istanbul Modern is Turkey's first modern art museum.It was established by Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (IFCA) with Eczacıbaşı Family's leadership and it inaugurated on December 11, 2004.It features the work of some Turkish artists.

 

15.ISTANBUL ARCHAELOGY MUSEUMS

 

 

Istanbul Archaeology Museum , a variety of cultures over one million works, is one of the largest museums in the world.It is the oldest building in Turkey which was built as a museum.It was established by painter and curator Osman Hamdi Bey at the end of 19th century,and opened to the public on June 13, 1891.There are the works of the civilizations within the borders of the Ottoman Empire in the museum.The museum consists of three main units,so ,it called Istanbul Archaeological Museums.

16.GALATA TOWER (GALATA KÖPRÜSÜ)

 

 

Galata Bridge was built on the Golden Horn in Istanbul,it unites New city (Karaköy,Beyoğlu,Harbiye) and Old city (Sultanahmet, Fatih, Eminönü).So it is like a symbol which unites 2 cultures.

 

17.ISTANBUL ATATÜRK OLYMPIC STADIUM

 

 

Istanbul Atatürk Olympic Stadium was built for project preparation of the Olympics and to serve Turkish athletism and football.The stadium listed as one of the world's largest and most important stadiums in "Stadi del Mondo" (Stadium of the World) of the book which published in 2005 by Gribaudo Publisher from Italy.All kinds of sports, social and cultural activities can be made in this stadium.

 

18.ALİ SAMİ YEN SPORTS COMPLEX (TÜRK TELEKOM ARENA )

 

 

Ali Sami Yen Sport Complex can be called as "Türk Telekom Arena " cause of sponsorship agreement. It is located in Şişli district of Istanbul. It receives,successfull Turkish football club in Europe,Galatasaray.Ali Sami Yen Sport Complex is the second high capacity stadium in Turkey with a capacity of 52,883 spectators after Olympic Stadium.

 

19.BEYOĞLU - TAKSIM SQUARE & ISTIKLAL STREET

20.THE OBELISK (DİKİLİTAŞ)

 

 

 

 The Obelisk is an ancient Egyptian obelisk that located in Sultanahmet Square on the south side,next to the Serpentine column.It was brought from Egypt by the Roman Emperor I.Theodosius In 390 AD.

 

21.YILDIZ PALACE ( YILDIZ SARAYI )

 

 

 

Yıldız Palace was built for Sultan III.Selim's mother Mihrişah Sultan between 1789 and 1807.It is located in Beşiktaş district of Istanbul.It was used as a main palace of Ottoman Empire between 1876-1909 years,in period of Ottoman Sultan II. Abdulhamid.

 

22.RUMELIAN CASTLE (RUMELİ HİSARI)

 

 

 

Rumelian Castle is a fortress located in Sarıyer district of Istanbul.It was built directly across the Anatolian Fortress by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror,between 1451 and 1452, before he conquered Istanbul, to avoid attacks from the north of the bosphorus.Three great towers of the fortress is the world's largest bastions.

 

23.ORTAKÖY

 

 

Ortaköy is located coast of the Istanbul bosphorus in Beşiktaş district.There is a famous square with baked potato (in Turkish Kumpir) and waffle buffets.Ortaköy is symbol of mosque district.It is a place of interest since Ottoman Empire period with a wonderful view.


24.TURKUAZOO

 

 

The TurkuaZoo is an aquarium located in Forum Istanbul Shopping Center,Bayrampaşa district of Istanbul.It is the biggest and first public aquarium in Turkey, and is one of the largest aquariums in Europe.You can see more than ten thousand of sea creatures.

 

25.NİŞANTAŞI-ŞİŞLİ

 

 

Nişantaşı is a famous part and quarter of the Şişli district on the European side of Istanbul.The place includes popular European style cafes,elite stores,pubs,night clubs and restaurants.

 

26.TURKISH AND ISLAMIC ARTS MUSEUM

 

 

 

Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum is the first Turkish museum covering the Turkish and Islamic art works collectively.It was constructed in 1524 and It is located in Sultanahmet Square in Fatih district of Istanbul.The museum was previously the palace of Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha, who was Suleyman the Magnificent's first grand vizier.

 

28.PRINCE ISLANDS (ADALAR)




The Prince Islands are a chain of nine islands (Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada, Kınalıada,Sedefadası, Sivriada, Yassıada, Kaşık Adası ve Tavşan Adası) off the coast of Istanbulin the Sea of Marmara.They are large islands of the chain; Büyükada ("Big Island") Heybeliada Burgazada ("Fortress Island") Kınalıada ("Henna Island").Prince Islands are good places for picnic,cycling and touristic phaeton trips.Also there are some beachs for swimming.
